Eco-D2G Ignition System


The Eco-D2G Ignition System for Natural Gas Engines is a completely integrated, stand alone system. The Primary design features are reliability, performance and ease of installation. The system features one ignition coil per cylinder and complete electronic control of the ignition timing.  


Mechanical Configuration

The entire electronics package is in a precision machined billet aluminum housing. The housing is designed to be a “drop in” replacement for the original diesel injection pump.

This design has many advantages. It eliminates the need for the installation of a crank trigger position sensor. It provides complete electronic shielding for the electronics. It provides the best possible grounding for the electronics circuit. It provides an extremely simple and consistent mounting interface for all types of engines.

An LED (light emitting diode) in the top of the unit makes the initial timing of the system extremely simple. The #1 cylinder is brought to the initial static timing point. The housing is slowly rotated until the LED turns on and the system is timed.


Electrical Configuration

Cam (crank) position and engine speed are sensed by Hall cells. The manifold absolute pressure, boost pressure and engine coolant temperature are also sensed. Ignition timing is computed from the combination of engine speed, manifold absolute pressure and coolant temperature.

A “vacuum hose exits the top of the housing for the connection to an external vacuum hose to measure manifold pressure making the connection to any size vacuum hose simple. All that is needed is a male to male adapter to accommodate the existing vacuum line size.


Electrical outputs for the system are the following:

One pulse output for each ignition coil.
Manifold Pressure Signal (0 to 5 Volts).
Electronic tachometer signal with a 50% duty cycle (0 to 5V).
Lambda Control Signal for the O2 Stepper Motor.
Boost Control Signal for the Butterfly valve.

Electrical inputs for the system are the following:

Battery.
Ignition Switch.
Coolant temperature sensor.
Manifold Pressure (internal MAP sensor).
Lambda Control Signal
Boost Pressure Signal

The peak coil current is set internally at the factory by software. Thus the system can be adjusted to give maximum performance with any ignition coil. The system has the capability of firing coils with energy outputs up to 150 millijoules with a 60,000 Volt Spark. The system provides full dwell control to the coils. Thus the coil energy remains constant for all engine speeds (including cranking) battery voltage and engine temperature.

The electronics are fully protected against reverse input voltage and voltage transients. The fully enclosed, grounded housing gives the maximum protection possible for radiated noise susceptibility.

Strong emphasis was put on making the system easy to install. Comprehensive instructions are provided. There are no field repairable components. Should the need arise to replace the electronic control module, the housing can be removed, replaced and re-timed in a matter of a minutes.

There is extensive field operation of this design on 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines. They have been used on engines operating to 5,000 rpm and supercharged engines producing over 800 horsepower.

The system can be provided with a custom wire harness and custom spark plug wire sets to simplify and enhance the appearance of the installation.
